Promoting a love of reading from an early age

Many of our participants at NMLL report that their formal education was curtailed or interrupted due to poverty, gender inequality or war
and civil unrest. All want to ensure that their children are able to particpate in a happy, successful and fulfilling life in Australia. Inspired
by their stories,  by work at New York's Harlem Children's Zone Baby College and in response to Australia's National Preventative
Health Strategy
on early childhood intervention, NMLL launched the Baby Book Borrow programme in 2010. It is one important way we
can equip parents with the skills and resources they need to give their children the opportunities they deserve.

The NMLL Baby Book Borrow programme aims to establish a culture and love of reading from the early months of a child's life by
making books easily accessible. Borrowing is run from the NMLL Student Community Room and is open to all NMLL students as well
as the wider community. Parents and children are encouraged to drop in as often as they like to borrow another bag of books.
There is no charge for the service.
The NMLL Baby Book Borrow programme is funded through the City of Melbourne Community Development Scheme, and has received great support from the local community. Hundreds of good quality books have been donated, and volunteers, staff and students continue to give their time.
